From the Sahara to the States: Pulitzer's 2023 Stories That Shaped Our Year

What we're reading: celebrating impactful journalism from the Pulitzer Center

As we at the Coalition For Women In Journalism and Women Press Freedom take a moment to appreciate the monumental efforts in storytelling and journalism, our focus turns to the remarkable work supported by the Pulitzer Center this year, the powerful narratives that have emerged, highlighting the diverse and critical issues that shape our world.

Among the multitude of stories published, 43 have particularly stood out for their impact, innovation, and depth. These stories span a wide range of topics — from the intricate connections between the Sahara desert and weather patterns in the United States, to the grave issues of illegal rosewood trafficking in Senegal. They shed light on vital topics such as Indigenous rights and language preservation in Peru, the decaying water infrastructure in Mississippi, and the daily realities of life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

These narratives are not just informative but also transformative. They represent stories of resilience, resistance, and community-based solutions, offering a beacon of hope and optimism for the future. The Pulitzer Center's support for these stories is a testament to their dedication to driving positive change through journalism.

As an organization devoted to advocating for women in journalism and press freedom, we see these stories as crucial tools for empowerment and awareness. They are not only a reflection of the world's complexities but also remind us of the power of well-crafted, insightful journalism.

Delve into this compilation and explore the intersections of global issues. This year's selection underscores the undeniable impact that journalism can have in shaping public discourse and bringing about meaningful change.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is a global organization of support for women journalists. The CFWIJ pioneered mentorship for mid-career women journalists across several countries around the world and is the first organization to focus on the status of free press for women journalists. We thoroughly document cases of any form of abuse against women in any part of the globe. Our system of individuals and organizations brings together the experience and mentorship necessary to help female career journalists navigate the industry. Our goal is to help develop a strong mechanism where women journalists can work safely and thrive.
