Clare Rewcastle-Brown, editor of Sarawak Report, fears arrest by Interpol on behalf of the Malaysian government. The journalist, known for exposing high-level corruption, shared her concerns with the UK media. On September 23, the Malaysian government issued a warrant for Clare’s arrest, pertaining to her 2018 book about the 1MDB scandal. Clare intends to travel to Spain to tend to visit her elderly father but is at risk of arrest under the Interpol’s Red Notice system.

Canada: CFWIJ Condemns the Threats Against Cbc Journalist Meghan Grant

CBC journalist Meghan Grant alongside NDP MLA Shannon Phillips received retaliatory threats from officers of Lethbridge Police Service for exposing misconduct within the police force. The threats came to light through a whistleblower who revealed the nature of the discussions within police offices regarding the ongoing investigations, claiming that retaliatory action is being discussed against the journalist and the lawmaker due to their activism and reportage.

Canada: Two More Women Journalists of Color Targeted as Deeply Racist, Organised Hate Campaign Escalates

The widespread hate campaign against journalists of color escalated on Monday with two more women journalists receiving threatening and abusive emails. At least 17 journalists were targeted after right-wing politician Maxime Bernier tweeted a provocative message inciting his supporters. Freelance sports journalist Shireen Ahmed and CBC host Angela Sterritt were the latest targets of the ongoing hate campaign, weaponized racist and misogynistic language to threaten, intimidate and silence journalists of color. Maxime’s tweet has since been deleted but the organised campaign against journalists has continued unabated, with many of the vile emails sent from the same email account.

Attorneys for Reporters Committee for Freedom of Press (RCFP) have sued the Department of Defense, office of US Central Command and US Agency for International Aid (USAID) on behalf of journalist Azmat Khan, claiming violation of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Azmat sought records on civilian casualties in US wars in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan and was not provided the documents.

Canada: Ashleigh-Rae Thomas Amongst Journalists Targeted in The Online Troll Campaign. CFWIJ Condemns the Attacks Against Women Journalists and Journalists of Color

At least 18 journalists received vile emails after right-wing politician Maxime Bernier tweeted a provocative message to his followers. Displeased by their coverage of his work, and their line of inquiry, Bernier encouraged his supporters to “play dirty”, thus initiating a violent targeted harassment campaign. He even went so far as to publish the email addresses of some of the journalists online, making them vulnerable to online abuse. Although later taken down by Twitter, the journalists faced hostile digital attacks as a result of his tweets.

Rwanda: CFWIJ is Concerned At Yvonne Idamange’s Conviction

Yvonne Idamange, a 42-year-old YouTube commentator and a survivor of the 1994 genocide, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday, September 30. She was accused of inciting violence after she posted critical videos on the performance of President Paul Kagame on her YouTube channel. Yvonne was arrested on February 15 and was not present in the courtroom on the day of the conviction.
