Greece: CFWIJ Is Appalled By The Physical Assault Of Journalist Eleftheria Spyraki

Eleftheria Spyraki, a correspondent associated with OPEN TV, was attacked and physically assaulted by miscreants in Thrakomakedones. The incident was reported around 2 a.m. late Saturday night as the crew was reporting a fire from the frontlines. Eleftheria narrated the attack live on an audio call, her voice cracking with fear as she described the details of what was happening.
According to her, a group of angry citizens had gathered around their car and smashed the windows. CFWIJ condemns the physical assault on Eleftheria, yet another woman journalist impeded at work. It is alarming that law enforcement authorities were present at the location but did not intervene to save Eleftheria and her colleagues. We demand an immediate investigation into the incident and negligence of the police.
Eleftheria Spyraki reported the attack against her on live TV. According to the journalist, a group of fifteen people surrounded the car, hurling slurs and smashing the station car windows until they were broken. The assailants cursed and assaulted the media crew and even snatched a bag carrying the personal belongings and wallet of a cameraman. Eleftheria confirmed that police officials were present at the scene but failed to take action on the aggressors.
In her live broadcast, Eleftheria stated, “They have surrounded the car we are in. They are hitting on the windows, they also attacked my colleague. The windows are broken.” After a few seconds, she burst into tears, with cries and chaos in the background. The studio crew was also visibly distressed by what was happening. Sometime before this, another OPEN TV correspondent, Costas Alatzas, was verbally harassed.
According to Eleftheria, the police and firefighters had previously asked the violent group to leave the scene of the fire. Instead, they attacked the media crew even after they took refuge in the station car. The assailants threw the camera to the ground, proceeded to punch the camera and push the journalist. Eleftheria was more disappointed and frustrated with the police's conduct and handling of the outburst. She said at least four police officers were present watching the attack but did nothing to help her. In the end, the firefighters intervened and stopped the attack.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands an immediate inquiry into the mishandling of the incident by police officers. The assailants responsible for the attack must be held accountable and brought to justice. We extend our solidarity to Eleftheria Spyraki and her colleagues.
The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
