France: Attempted Assassination Of Environmental Reporter Morgan Large Must Be Investigated

Location: France, Brittany
Date: March 31, 2023

Car of French journalist Morgan Large sabotaged second time in two years. First investigation dropped due to “lack of evidence.” CFWIJ calls for French authorities to investigate the assassination attempts vigorously to protect journalists and safeguard democracy.

On March 24, 2023, environmental journalist Morgan Large discovered that her left rear wheel nuts were dangerously loose. A mechanic said the wheel was almost detached. Large had driven her car the previous evening without any issues but had brought her car in after hearing suspicious noises. She filed a complaint with the police.

Large told CPJ she believes it was intentional sabotage. Known for her investigations into agribusinesses, Morgan Large has been the target of numerous attempts at intimidation, including nocturnal phone calls, insults, and the attempted poisoning of her dog.

In March 2021, Large experienced a similar incident. Shortly after a documentary broadcast in which she testified to the excesses of the agri-food industry in Brittany, her car’s wheel’ bolts were tampered with.

St-Brieuc’s Public prosecutor opened an investigation. Reporters Without Borders asked for police protection for the journalist. The case was dismissed due to a lack of evidence, and police denied protection.

“French security agencies must protect journalists,” says Kiran Nazish, Founding Director of the CFWIJ. “Free press is a pillar of democracy. Without journalists' ability to do their jobs safely, democracy can’t exist.”

The attempts on Large’s life, including the prolonged harassment, must be taken seriously.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands authorities investigate and release their findings.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is a global organization of support for women journalists. The CFWIJ pioneered mentorship for mid-career women journalists across several countries around the world and is the first organization to focus on the status of free press for women journalists. We thoroughly document cases of any form of abuse against women in any part of the globe. Our system of individuals and organizations brings together the experience and mentorship necessary to help female career journalists navigate the industry. Our goal is to help develop a strong mechanism where women journalists can work safely and thrive.
