Algeria: CFWIJ Calls For An Immediate Investigation Into The Brutal Murder Of Journalist Tin Hinan Laceb

Location: Algeria
Date: January 28, 2021

Prominent Algerian journalist Tin Hinan Laceb, of ENTV’s Amazigh channel (TV4), was reportedly killed by her husband on January 26. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is horrified by the appalling attack. We demand Algerian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of Tin Hinan immediately.

Speaking to CFWIJ, Sarah Rezig, a member of the Observatory for Statistics of Women Murdered, reported the journalist was murdered yesterday night, January 26, 2021. Sarah confirmed that Tin Hinan’s husband was arrested for her murder, underlining the issue of domestic violence in Algeria.

According to Sarah, ENTV’s Amazigh channel, where Tin Hinan worked as a journalist, released a statement on their official page about her murder.  The statement mentions that Tin Hinan’s fellow journalists confirmed it was her husband who killed her.

Sarah elaborated that the information circulating suggests Tin Hinan Laceb was murdered over a personal dispute, having faced physical abuse before. However, she added, there was no official confirmation about the motives of the crime.

Radio M said the incident came as a great shock to the colleagues of Tin Hinan, who mourned her loss in social media posts.  Cairo Times also announced the distressing death of the journalist. The news outlet concurred there is no further information about the incident.

Tin Hinan Laceb was married with two daughters and worked as a presenter for the Algerian TV4, dedicated to the Amazigh-speaking community. She appeared on TV4 for many years and worked as a website specialist for Arab and Amazigh news.

This is the second killing of a woman journalist documented by CFWIJ in January 2021. Within the first month of the year, we report another brutal murder. CFWIJ remains deeply concerned about the safety of women journalists around the world.

CFWIJ documented a similar femicide case in 2020. Shaheena Shaheen Baloch was a journalist with PTV Bolan, brutally murdered in Turbat, Balochistan. Shaheena was allegedly shot twice to unsurvivable injuries by who we found to be her husband.

We demand the Algerian authorities investigate the murder of the journalist. We call upon them to punish Tin Hinan’s husband for the heinous crime he has committed. Domestic violence and femicide are among the most dangerous human rights violations around the world. These crimes must be addressed and the perpetrators penalized.

The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
