Ukraine: Journalism Professor Lilia Humianova Killed by Russian Shelling in Mariupol

The Coalition For Women In Journalism mourns her loss deeply and sends our deepest condolences to her friends and loved ones

Location: Ukraine, Mariupol
Date: March 19, 2022

Lilia Humianova, a professor of journalism and head of the art department at the Left Bank of District House of Children’s and Youth Art in Mariupol, was killed while attempting to assist residents trapped in a bomb shelter during intense Russian shelling. The Coalition For Women In Journalism vehemently condemns Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, and denounces any targeting of any civilians in the conflict.

On March 19, 2022, amidst intense Russian shelling in the city of Mariupol, Lilia Humianova was in the process of opening a bomb shelter in the House of Creativity when she was killed. Despite the imminent threat to her own safety, she chose to remain with the residents of Mariupol’s Left Bank.

Lilia Humianova's dedication to journalism and education was far-reaching. She played a pivotal role in nurturing young talent through her work with the Dreamers’ Club for young journalists at the Left Bank House of Children’s and Youth Creativity. Her commitment to fostering journalistic skills among the youth was evident through the success of the newspaper "Magical House," which, under her guidance, secured victory in the international school media contest in 2021.

The loss of Lilia Humianova is not only a tragedy for her family, friends, and colleagues but also a significant blow to press freedom and journalistic integrity. Her passion for journalism, coupled with her tireless efforts to mentor and inspire the next generation of journalists, leaves behind a profound legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate within the journalism community and beyond.

Lilia Humianova's killing is a stark reminder of the perilous conditions journalists face in conflict zones. Numerous journalists have lost their lives in the conflict. Their commitment to truth-telling and public service often places them in harm's way as they strive to document and report on events unfolding amidst violence and instability.

As we mourn the loss of Lilia Humianova, we must also reaffirm our commitment to upholding press freedom and supporting journalists who risk their lives to shine a light on the truth, especially in times of conflict and crisis. Their bravery and sacrifice must never be forgotten, and their invaluable contributions to democracy and human rights must be honored and protected.
